Winter Safety Item Checklist Anyone who has driven in the Oneida, NY area for a while knows what a central New York winter is like — the ice, snow, slush, and cold temperatures all contribute to often making the season a hazardous time to get behind the wheel. It doesn’t matter how good of a driver you are; chances are sooner or later you will face a situation where you will have some kind of a winter driving emergency. At the NYE Automotive Group, we want all drivers to be prepared for whatever the winter brings to our roadways. We encourage all vehicle owners to plan ahead for any possibility of crisis in their winter trips, and the best way to do that is to have an emergency kit along for the ride. If you get caught in a snow drift or slide into a snow bank, you’ll want to have a metal shovel to dig yourself out. Avoid plastic shovels for your kit because you‘ll want the extra strength of the metal if you need to chip away at any ice. And make sure you dig out immediately around the exhaust pipe if you can keep your vehicle running so those toxic fumes don’t come back into your vehicle. If the vehicle isn’t running, the temperature is likely to drop quickly, so wrap yourself and any passengers in a blanket while you wait for help to arrive. Light sticks and flares are a great way to make your vehicle visible to any other passing motorists, and a flashlight will help you inspect the situation to see if you can get yourself out of your dilemma. If not, bottles of water and protein snack bars are also a good addition to your kit just in case you‘ll be there for an extended period and don‘t have your hunting gear with you. With the holidays coming up, a winter emergency kit makes a great gift idea, especially for young people heading away from home. And they are a great accessory with that new vehicle you buy at NYE Automotive. The NYE Automotive Group is located at 1479 Genesee St. in Oneida, N.Y. 13421.
