Spring Into Safer Driving It’s been a long, rough winter here in Central New York State, but the roads are finally starting to clear now so it won’t be long before the return of summer road trips. At the NYE Automotive Group, we look forward to those breezy rides in the summertime as much as any driver. In the meantime, spring gives us all the perfect time to make sure our vehicles are in perfect working order for those long sojourns out on the roadway. We aren‘t talking about simply spring cleaning the salt and sand from the carpeting … it‘s all those potential mechanical glitches, with many brought on thanks to that harsh winter weather, that need a little extra attention this time of year. Winter’s cold temperatures are especially rough on your battery, so you will want to have it checked out. Signs you need to take a look at the battery include sluggish starts, dim headlights and interior lights, interior clocks resetting to 12:00, and any other unusual changes in any electrical apparatus. Snow, salt, and cold temperatures are also harsh on your brakes, and the icy road conditions can really give your anti-lock braking systems a tough time. Those brakes are of utmost importance to a safe ride, and if your vehicle pulls to the side when you apply the brakes or you hear strange squeaks or grinding, it‘s time to have the brakes checked. Inspect the tires with a coin by inserting a quarter into the grooves in several locations across each tire. If you can see all of George Washington’s head, it’s time to consider some new tires with adequate treads. And even if the treads are OK, check your tire pressure and make sure they are inflated to your manufacturer’s recommendation. It’s a little early yet, but test the air conditioning by turning the cooler on full blast to see if it reaches a maximum chill in a short time. You likely won’t need the AC for awhile, but there’s no point in waiting until that first hot day when you are sweltering to find out it isn’t working. Our service shops will check these as well as all belts and hoses to make sure you don’t have the unwelcome surprise of a visit to the shoulder of the road somewhere, while you could be enjoying a fun trip somewhere else. At the NYE Automotive Group, we know there‘s nothing that puts a stop to a vacation getaway — no matter how short or long a trip it might be — than a mechanical breakdown. Give us a call today and we‘ll make sure you get where you are going all year round. The NYE Automotive Group is located at 1479 Genesee St. in Oneida, N.Y. 13421.
