Smile – You’re on Rearview Camera At the NYE Automotive Group, one of the best parts of our job is to share cutting edge technology with our customers. The construction of vehicles is ever-changing and the new-and-improved features are constantly making your drive safer than ever before. One of the coolest technological breakthroughs of recent years is the rearview camera — a small device about the size of a nickel that is mounted on the outside of a vehicle to give you real-time video of the scene behind you. Those images show any obstructions, whether stationary or moving as they come into the camera’s field of vision, to help prevent backing accidents. Some of those rearview cameras even incorporate backup sensors to enhance the drivers‘ sense of obstructions as they back up. Rearview cameras, usually located near the license plate, capture images that are actually the opposite of what you end up seeing on the display inside the vehicle. That mirror image on your monitor screen up front is the video reversed to give you the proper orientation, making sure you turn away from the obstruction rather than towards it. These aren’t actually new inventions — the first rearview cameras were developed in the late 1970s to compensate for blind spots in large construction vehicles. Auto manufacturers saw the inspiration from those cameras and decided to create their own, and today nearly every one of them offers some kind of rearview camera on vehicles in their line. Toyota has developed one of the most impressive rearview cameras for its Camry, Tacoma, 4Runner and several other models. That system features a small display mounted to the rearview mirror itself that will activate either as the vehicle slides into reverse or when turned on by the driver. With the image right on the rearview mirror, the driver doesn’t need to take his or her eyes away to look down at a video screen on the dashboard.
