Perils of Potholes As the snow starts to thaw here in Central New York, one of the biggest dangers to your vehicle creates hazardous driving conditions even on clear roads. Those dreaded potholes are back to wreck havoc on not only your nerves but also your vehicle’s control ability. At the NYE Automotive Group, we want drivers to know the effect of hitting a pothole can go way beyond simply damaging the tires. The safety of your vehicle can easily be compromised by a hit from one of those roadway landmines, as the impact can strike numerous areas throughout your car, truck, van, or SUV. Potholes are caused as the freezing and thawing of water erodes dirt beneath the asphalt. The crater formed as the dirt falls away and the asphalt collapses into the crevice is the pothole. Unfortunately, there is often little warning to drivers that a pothole is approaching, and often they are hit at full speed. Blown tires and misalignments of the steering system can be the result of bad impacts with potholes. Warning signs of tire damage include bulging in the sidewall area and bending in the rims. Dents can also form in the undercarriage, compromising the rust proofing or even causing fluid leaks. Besides the tires and undercarriage, shocks and struts can be damaged by hard impact with a pothole. Normally, they absorb the bumps in the road to make for a comfortable trip, but if damaged that function can be lost and your vehicle will bounce all over — making driving hard to control. Your steering and braking can be affected by a broken shock or strut. If your vehicle sways on turns, slides sideways on rough roads, bottoms out on bumps, sits lower in the front or rear, or the front end dives while braking or rear end squats while accelerating, it’s time to have it checked at your favorite NYE Automotive repair shop. At the NYE Automotive Group, the safety of everyone in your vehicle is of utmost importance. So if you’ve been out playing roadway “Whack-a-Mole” with the potholes, stop by and we’ll check out your ride to make sure it’s as safe as possible for you and your family.
