Oh Deer… Time for a Trip to NYE Service As much as I love my “NYE Guys,” a visit to their Oneida, N.Y. automotive repair shops is something I prefer to make by own choice. Unfortunately, the deer that hit my car recently made that decision for me. Yeah, the deer literally hit me, rather than me hitting it — it walked across the road in front of my Ford Focus and was free and clear until suddenly it reared back, directly into my sideview mirror. And then it ran away, laughing (or whatever deer do when they are feeling superior to you). I must admit, initially I examined that destroyed mirror and thought about fixing it myself. I even checked out a video online and saw how simple it is to mount a brand-new mirror to the side of the car. But then I remembered all the other times I’ve “repaired” something wrong with the car, and the additional bills those efforts brought me when I then had to go have whatever I botched re-done by the professionals. I called NYE Automotive’s Ford repair shop and scheduled an appointment for a new mirror installation. I also figured since I was there anyways I might as well get a couple new tires for some added traction on those icy central New York roads. I’m still thrilled by the drive-through entrance to the shop, especially during the cold winter weather. You drive right in, park your vehicle with the keys in the ignition, and leave it there for them to repair in the order received. But that thrill quickly evaporated in the waiting room shortly after I arrived as I heard one of the technicians ask the woman who had parked in front of me for her keys. She replied she left them in the ignition like she was supposed to do, but then he told her that she had also locked her doors so they couldn’t get at them. Luckily, she had a spare key in her purse, and the line was flowing once again. I had elected to wait for my repair, and sat in their waiting room enjoying a few cups of complimentary coffee while watching the news on the big screen TV. Everyone seemed in good spirits, and NYE service people stopped by every so often to go over a repair with the clientele. My own repair guy came by early in the procedure to go over the project with me before starting, and soon it was time to roll on to the road with my new tires and able to once again see behind me. Looking on the bright side, at least it was only a trip to the repair shop … if the mirror hadn’t taken the brunt of the impact, I could have been in for a long session in the NYE body shop with more substantial damage. Plus the very next night a buddy sent me the message that she had hit and killed a deer in the nearly the same location. I’ve got to admit I was kind of hopeful it was my nemesis, who now won’t be laughing at any more drivers when it attacks their own vehicles.
