Inflatable Seatbelts Mean Safety & Comfort The end of the year might be the time when youngsters look forward to the holidays, but for vehicle enthusiasts it is just as exciting because that’s when they can check out the latest cutting edge technology in the newest models. At the NYE Automotive Group, we share that exuberance as we bring to the lot all of the latest offerings from Ford, Toyota, Buick, Scion, and General Motors. Much like opening gifts under the tree, seeing the newest tech brings a certain glee and even sometimes thoughts of “Why didn’t I think of that?” and “Where has this been since I started driving?” That’s pretty much the way we look at the inflatable rear outboard seatbelts on the 2014 Ford Explorer. This world-first in cutting edge safety technology and comfort combines the restraint of a traditional seatbelt with the instantaneous inflation cushion of an air bag. The inflatable belts help reduce the risk of injury by holding the passenger securely while at the same time supporting the head and neck in a crash. They are especially suited for children and the elderly, and the inflatable belts are also compatible with child safety seats. Inflatable seatbelts actually fill even faster than traditional airbags because they aren’t quite as large. If there is a front or side collision, that belt is designed to inflate with cold compressed air in less than a second, distributing the crash force across a larger portion of the rider’s torso than a regular seatbelt. It also reduces the bruising often caused when a crash forces the passenger to be thrown forward into the old-style seatbelt. Ford’s research has also found more than 90 percent of the people who tried them found them more comfortable than the traditional belts, an attribute they hope will prompt more back seat riders to wear their safety belts. You can marvel at a video of an inflatable seatbelt test for yourself at: www.ford.com/technology. Currently, only the 2014 Ford Explorer is offering this feature, but watch for the belts to be available in other Ford vehicles in the near future as well. The NYE Automotive Group is proud to be able to offer the latest technology in motor vehicles. We are located at 1479 Genesee St. in Oneida, N.Y.
