Gas Vs. Electric for Energy Efficiency Looking for an alternative to the high expense of driving your gas hungry vehicle? Or just wanting to drive a little bit greener? The folks at the Ford Motor Company have a range of options available from Ecoboost power enhancers to gas and electric hybrids to all-electric vehicles, but the choices can be somewhat confusing to the novice. Here’s a guide to driving green while saving some green: Ecoboost engines deliver efficiency and power through turbocharging and direct injection, giving smaller engines the boost to produce greater power. It is available on Focus ST, Fusion, Taurus, Escape, Edge, Flex, Explorer, and the F-150 truck. The Hybrid is a gas engine combined with a battery-driven electric motor, effortlessly switching between the two or into a combination of both. The gas engine and regenerative braking recharge the battery automatically, so it never needs to be plugged in. Hybrid is available on C-Max Hybrid and Fusion Hybrid. The plug-in Hybrid is part gas, part electric, but allows the driver to maximize the battery capability by plugging into standard 120-volt outlets. You can drive solely electric for short trips, or as a Hybrid at higher speeds and longer distances. Plug-in Hybrid is available on C-Max Energi and Fusion Energi. All-electric vehicles use no gas or oil at all, while producing no carbon monoxide. They are powered totally by an electric motor and lithium-ion battery recharged in a plug-in charge port. The Focus Electric offers an all-electric engine.
