Ford Goes Green At the NYE Automotive Group, we know the importance of planning ahead for future generations, and striving to be more environmentally conscious to make sure those generations to come have a healthy world to live in. The Ford Motor Company believes in that too. They have taken on their own initiatives to make the world of the future a better place — and those projects were recently commended by a worldwide study of the companies striving to be the most “green.” Interbrand — the world’s leading brand marketing consultant with offices across the globe — recently released the results of a study to determine the 50 Best Global Green Brands for 2014. In the number one position was the Ford Motor Company. The findings were the results of data collection and interviews with industry leaders. Ford was selected as the leader because of their commitment to sustainability, as well as their partnerships with other groups to succeed as an environmentally friendly innovator. The Interbrand reports states that “Ford embodies everything the business of the future must be: efficient, visionary, flexible, adept at problem-solving, cooperative, and focused on creating shared value.” One of the biggest boons to taking the number one spot was the introduction of the C-MAX Solar Energi Concept, the first-of-its-kind solar-powered vehicle. Ford’s partnerships cited in the report including working with Heinz to create bio-plastic from tomato fibers that would otherwise be unused in their production of catsup. Around 90 percent of Ford’s current vehicles boast the EcoBoost engine that uses turbocharging and direct injection to offer up to 20 percent better fuel economy, without a loss of performance. To date, some two million EcoBoost engines have been installed in Ford vehicles. Between 2000 and 2012, Ford reduced carbon dioxide emissions in their facilities by nearly 50 percent, an equivalent of 4.65 million metric tons. Last year, Ford developed a new plan that would reduce their waste sent to landfills worldwide by 40 percent through 2016. This comes right after they already reduced their worldwide per-vehicle waste sent to landfills by 40 percent between 2007 and 2011. Ford is also currently reducing energy and water use in their plants in the United States by initiating new processes that allow the company to save more than 280,000 gallons of water per year on a single production line.
