Whether You’re Buying New Or Used, Consider Safety First

Whether You're Buying New Or Used, Consider Safety FirstThe most important features of any vehicle involve safety. Here are some safety features to evaluate when buying a new or used vehicle:

  • Driving position and visibility

When you test drive a vehicle, always make a note of the driving position. Is the seating position comfortable? Are the controls easy to reach and use? Can you operate the pedals easily? Each of these points is important for using your vehicle safely. Visibility is also a major factor. If you cannot see clearly to the sides and rear of the car without using the mirrors, then you should probably consider a different vehicle.

  • Seat belts and air bags

Seat belts and shoulder belts are standard equipment in all vehicles. Air bags are also standard, but some vehicles offer added side air bags for the driver and passenger. Also remember that air bags can cause injury to younger passengers, so be sure to follow the rules for carrying passengers in vehicles equipped with passenger side air bags.

  • Stability control

Stability control is a key safety feature for SUVs and crossovers. In the past, some of these vehicles have performed poorly in rollover tests. But stability control has made many of these models safer by providing steering and braking assistance to the driver in situations that might otherwise potentially cause a rollover condition. Look for stability control if it is available in your vehicle.

  • Traction control

Traction control helps in wet or loose pavement conditions by controlling braking and allowing stopping and steering without losing traction. Traction control is very common on today’s vehicles, as are anti-lock brakes.

  • Anti-lock brakes

Anti-lock braking uses sensors to detect tire traction loss, and the system modulates braking force to allow maximum braking efficiency. This significantly reduces stopping distances and allows the driver to apply steady pressure to the brake pedal. It is important not to pump the brakes with anti-lock braking systems, since this defeats the purpose of the feature.

NYE Automotive Group wants you to find the vehicle that meets your needs in all areas, but most important, safety.
