Vehicle Trade-Ins 101: What To Tell The Dealer

If you’re planning to trade in a vehicle at a dealership, you may be feeling a certain amount of apprehension. Is your car or truck in the best shape that it can be? Will you get a fair price for it? Are you comfortable negotiating on the price tag?

A vehicle trade-in can be a positive experience if you prepare and take a proactive approach. So consider those tips when it’s time for a change.

Know the value of your vehicle from a dealer’s perspective.

Auto dealers see hundreds of vehicles in a month’s time, and when they see yours, they may not want to pay the highest trade-in price for it. Not only do dealers need to make a profit on reselling vehicles, but there are a large number of potential vehicle trade-ins out there. For example, if you have a vehicle that is already part of the dealership’s pre-owned inventory, then the dealer may not offer you the top price.

Consider your vehicle’s age, mileage and history when setting an asking price (and do have a sense of its book value).

Some vehicles probably should not be offered as trade-ins. Any vehicle over 15 years old or past 150,000 miles is likely not a promising candidate. You may want to sell an older vehicle privately or think about donating it and taking a charitable deduction off of next year’s income taxes.

Be flexible — remember that your goal is to get the most value from your trade-in.

You should always be flexible on vehicle trade-ins, because you cannot know the variables the dealer has to consider when deciding on a price to pay. Business factors such as end-of-month incentives, the dealer’s overall inventory, and the desire to carry a particular model will all play an important part in the pricing decision.
