Is Your Vehicle Road Trip-Worthy? Planning a summer road trip? Make sure you check these important vehicle maintenance areas first: Tires and suspension Belts and hoses Air conditioning Steering and brakes Battery, lights and electrical Spare tire and emergency equipment Your tires should be in good shape and have plenty of tread. Also, check for correct tire pressures and inspect your tires for any punctures. These can go unnoticed if a nail or screw is stuck in the tread or sidewall. Make sure your belts and hoses are in good condition, without any cracks or signs of age. Belts will show cracking on the inside or fraying at the edges, while hoses become stiff and dry with age. Your cooling system should have no leaks or other issues, but if it does, have the system pressure-tested and repaired. Check the level and condition of power steering fluid and brake fluid. Have your vehicle inspected for brake pad wear and brake system integrity. Examine your battery and consider whether it’s time to replace it. Today’s vehicle electrical systems put a strain on batteries, and it’s better to replace one before you need it than to be stranded with a dead battery. Check all lights and replace bulbs as needed. Don’t forget your spare tire. It should be in new condition and ready to be installed on your vehicle. Check the jack and lug wrench to make sure you can use them. If you don’t already have one, get an emergency kit with flares, reflector and other emergency equipment. And be sure to take along a first aid kit.
