Hybrid? SUV? Crossover? What You Should Know About Vehicle Types When Buying A New Car

When you’re in the market for a new vehicle, everything from the New York winters to the size of your family must be considered. It also helps to have a basic understanding of the various types of vehicles available. Doing a little research beforehand can prevent you from making a purchase you might later regret.

Let’s hit the high points on some of the vehicle types available today.

  • Sedan – Sedans run the gamut in terms of size, power and market segment. Sedans can comfortably seat up to five depending on size and are available with hatchbacks for those requiring extra storage.
  • Hybrids – Generally based on regular vehicles, sizes range from two-person sedans to eight-passenger full-size SUVs. Known for fuel economy, not all hybrids operate the same. Parallel systems run on electricity, gasoline or both. Mild hybrids use electricity to support the gasoline engine and plug-ins use a gasoline engine to back up the electrical engine.
  • SUV – While compacts offer affordability, larger models hold more cargo and carry up to eight passengers. Crossover models offer the most in terms of handling, fuel economy and comfort, but truck-based models are more appropriate for those interested in off-road and towing capabilities.
  • Minivan – Available in compact and regular sizes, minivans can seat up to eight comfortably and offer more cargo space than most SUVs; they’re also more affordable.
  • Truck – With cabs available in regular, extended and crew designs, some trucks can seat up to six passengers comfortably while providing a wide range of towing capabilities. Fuel costs increase with engine size, with 4-8 cylinders available.

Remember, these are just a few of your options. If you’re looking for a new vehicle, visit us at NYE Automotive Group for an in-depth look at the various types of vehicles available on the market today.
